“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” – Matthew 19:29
Those who are considered inspirational in this world are those who overcome immense obstacles in their lives. Although, perhaps even more inspirational are those who not only overcome these obstacles but rose above and beyond them. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini is one of these incredible people. She not only met her obstacles with a steadfast faith in God, but with grace she accomplish so much beyond those road blocks.
Frances Cabrini was born to a humble farming Italian family in 1850. During her youth, she greatly desired to enter the convent but due to unstable health she was not accepted. Thus she continued to help her parents on the farm and took care of them till their death. God’s will for Frances’s life was shown to her when a priest asked her if she would be willing to teach at a local girl’s school. She gladly accepted and dedicated herself to this for six years. Soon the desires of her youth and divine will were going to meet.
The local bishop requested her to be the founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Their charism was going to be caring for poor children in schools and hospitals. This mission became Mother Cabrini’s life and purpose. Then, the community received an immense request that they could not say no to. Pope Leo XIII asked Mother Cabrini to move to New York City in the aid of Italian Immigrants. What daring request from the Vicar Of Christ himself!
Along with six other sisters, St. Cabrini picked up everything to go to a new land all for the sake of their call. They reached New York, and began their ministry there. In this strange land, this amazing women watched hospitals, orphanages, and schools take off. They were the source of help to hundreds of Italian Immigrants who were in desperate need of a hand. At the time of Mother Cabrini’s death, in 1917, her community’s mission had reached England, France, Spain, the United States, and South America.
Allow me to remind you where this remarkable story began. It all began with a young ,poor, sickly, Italian farmer girl. And it ended with a holy, strong, founder and superior of an international community. Incredible isn’t it? The things God can do in our lives! This is the truth that faith can truly move mountains. As long as we know Him, He will work through us. Let us pray for the grace to really know and accept the reality of what God wants to do in our lives. To trust Him in his perfect will. To pour ourselves out in love for all. And to have the courage to be saints, for it is in this that our deepest desires will be fulfilled.
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, Pray for us!
“I will go anywhere and do anything in order to communicate the love of Jesus to those who do not know Him or have forgotten Him.” -St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
